cemetary

Cemetery State

In Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, children and youngsters have taken over the management of death. The dead have become their ‘toy’, and the coffin has become like a football that one tosses up and plays around with. ‘Cemetery State’ observes how these young gravediggers, singers and drummers use the body of the dead as an alternative platform to attack and challenge their elders and to create their own (dis)order.

Ascese and Diamonds

Asceticism and Diamonds

The Jains in Belgium are hardly known. This has much to do with their unusual moral principles and doctrine of purity: no meat, seafood, dairy, carrots nor honey, no alcohol, nor tobacco of course.. All strictly forbidden. Their work ethic is just as intense. Wealth is considered evidence of a life lived according to the rules. In the streets around the Middelheimpark in Antwerp it seems like the Jains there must be on the right track.

teokomst

Toekomst(EN) / Avenir(S)

When the children of today will be grandparents, their circumstances will be determined in part by the political form Belgium takes by then. This issue receives so much attention that we forget it presents only one of many possible questions about futures in Belgium. To explore the other questions, ‘Toekomst(EN) – Avenir(S)’ follows a range of Belgians who deal with images of the future in their daily practice: the comic strip maker and his imaginary Brüsel.

Tom Barman, Portrait of a young Man as an Artist

A movie as a soundtrack, however this time the musical story is told by means of the pictures. It is a story about Tom Barman, the man who composed the soundtrack.Public figure Tom Barman hardly needs introduction: he is front man of rock band dEUS, musical factotum and the man behind the 0110 happening against ultra-right. However the extrovert artist – who enchants, seduces, affects and inspires – hardly ever bares his soul.

Garimpeiros

Nzofu, a small village on the border between Congo and Angola is part of a diamond smuggling route between the two countries. Ever since the mid-1980s, a steady flow of Congolese youngsters has ventured into Angola in search of diamonds. They work as artisanal miners (garimpeiros), or barter goods such as soap bars, cloth, beer, whisky or tins of sardines for that precious commodity: diamonds. They invariably end up in a harsh and violent environment.
